Another Walgreens pharmacy has closed in north St. Louis County, leaving many residents frustrated and unsure of where to go for prescriptions and basic health needs. The Walgreens near Halls Ferry and Chambers roads, a longtime neighborhood staple, officially shut down its pharmacy services in January and the store is expected to close permanently on March 5.
The closure is part of a growing pattern of pharmacies and grocery stores shutting down across North County, sparking fears that more neighborhoods are turning into “pharmacy deserts,” areas where residents don’t have a pharmacy within a mile of their homes. Families who relied on the store for convenience now have to travel farther, which can be especially difficult for seniors and those managing chronic conditions.
Community leaders are worried the loss will create even more challenges, not only for customers but also for employees who may be out of work. Local organizations like the Urban League are offering support to help displaced workers find new jobs. Meanwhile, locally owned pharmacies such as Greater Health Pharmacy & Wellness are stepping in to fill the gap and plan to expand services in the area.
Residents say they hope solutions come soon, as access to nearby pharmacies remains a critical need for North County communities.
