Webster Groves City Manager Announces Resignation

Webster Groves City Manager Marie Peoples has announced her resignation after roughly six years with the city, officials confirmed during Tuesday night’s city council meeting.

Mayor Laura Arnold said Peoples submitted her letter of resignation earlier in the day. Peoples briefly addressed the council, calling her time as city manager “an absolute honor” and thanking city staff, council members and residents for their work together.

Peoples’ final day as city manager will be April 3. She is expected to continue assisting with transition services through June 5. Arnold said the city will recognize Peoples’ service at a later date.

Peoples was hired in 2020 after a national search to replace longtime City Manager Steve Wylie, who retired after nearly two decades in the role. She brought more than 20 years of public-sector experience to Webster Groves, including leadership positions in Coconino County, Arizona, as well as prior work in Springfield and Jefferson City.

Her departure comes amid several recent leadership changes within the city. Webster Groves’ fire chief retired in December, and city officials have been navigating ongoing budget discussions related to rising personnel costs. Earlier this year, the city council considered new sales taxes before opting to explore budget cuts instead.

City council members did not comment further on Peoples’ resignation during the meeting.
