An overnight police pursuit that began in north St. Louis County ended with a fatal officer-involved shooting in north St. Louis late Sunday.

According to authorities, officers with the St. Louis County Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert reporting gunfire near Lucas and Hunt Road shortly before 11 p.m. Investigators said the shots were connected to a man driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, leading police on a pursuit into north St. Louis. The chase ended near North 2nd Street and East Grand Avenue when the truck was forced to stop by a passing train, police said.

Officials said the suspect exited the vehicle and displayed a firearm, prompting multiple county officers to open fire. The man, described as being in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene after receiving medical aid. No officers were injured.

Police confirmed a gun was recovered, though investigators are still determining whether it was fired. Five county officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, per standard procedure.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Force Investigation Unit is leading the investigation into the shooting, while county police continue to investigate the initial shots-fired call that sparked the pursuit.
