A late night crash in Maplewood sent one person to the hospital and caused widespread power outages early Thursday morning after a vehicle struck a utility pole along Big Bend Boulevard.

Police say the single vehicle crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. near the intersection of Big Bend Boulevard and Folk Avenue. An Acura sedan traveling southbound reportedly lost control and hit the pole, knocking down power lines and damaging nearby transformers.

Ameren reported that roughly 270 to 300 customers in the area lost power as a result of the crash. Utility crews were called to the scene to begin repairs, which were expected to take several hours.

The driver, the only person inside the vehicle, was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. No other injuries were reported.

Big Bend Boulevard was temporarily closed as emergency responders and utility crews worked to clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure. Traffic has since reopened, but officials urged drivers to remain cautious in the area while repairs continue.
