Winter weather caused widespread travel disruptions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport over the weekend, leading to more than 150 flight cancellations and over 100 delays on Sunday alone.

Airport officials said the bulk of the issues were tied to severe weather impacting air travel nationwide, not just conditions in St. Louis. While Lambert picked up around eight to nine inches of snow, airport leaders said the snowfall itself was manageable. The bigger challenge has been the bitter cold, which complicates deicing aircraft and keeping crews working safely outdoors.

As of Monday morning, dozens of additional flights were already canceled or delayed as the storm system continued moving across the country. Nationally, more than 10,000 flights were canceled Sunday, making it one of the most disruptive travel days since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to FlightAware. Hundreds more cancellations were already reported for Monday.

Travelers at Lambert described light crowds and long waits, with many arriving early in hopes their flights would still depart. Airport officials continue to urge passengers to check directly with their airlines for the latest updates, noting that federal rules entitle travelers to refunds if flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

The region is expected to remain locked in below-freezing temperatures for much of the week, though no additional snow is currently forecast.
