Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced Monday that the Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement to build a new domed stadium in Kansas, a deal state leaders are calling a historic economic win for the Sunflower State.

The $3 billion stadium is planned for Wyandotte County and is expected to open in time for the 2031 NFL season, when the Chiefs’ current lease at Arrowhead Stadium expires. The agreement also includes a new team headquarters and training facility in Olathe, along with a surrounding mixed-use entertainment district.

State officials estimate the project will generate more than 20,000 jobs and produce roughly $4.4 billion in economic impact, with an additional $1 billion annually once the development is fully operational. Kansas lawmakers unanimously approved the incentive package Monday through the Legislative Coordinating Council.

The deal relies heavily on Kansas’ Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bond program, which allows future sales and liquor tax revenue from the development area to help cover up to 70% of construction costs. Supporters say the approach avoids raising taxes or using money from the state’s general budget.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt both praised the agreement, highlighting the potential for year-round events such as concerts, Final Fours, and even a future Super Bowl. The move would mark the end of the Chiefs’ 53-year run in Missouri and a significant shift in the Kansas City region’s sports landscape.

Construction is expected to begin later this decade, with the Chiefs remaining at Arrowhead Stadium through the 2030 season.
