Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is giving its athletics program a temporary new identity in 2026 to celebrate the centennial of historic Route 66.
Throughout the year, SIUE teams will compete under the name “SIUE 66ers,” featuring a special logo and updated color scheme. All 16 varsity programs will wear the new branding at least once during the year.
SIUE Athletic Director Andrew Gavin said the change is meant to honor both the university’s role as the Metro East’s lone Division I program and the region’s deep ties to the iconic highway. Route 66 begins in Chicago and stretches nearly 300 miles across Illinois before crossing into Missouri.
The initiative is also being supported by local tourism leaders, who view the partnership as a creative way to celebrate Illinois history while spotlighting the Metro East community.
The Cougars will return to their original identity after the 2026 season.
