⚖️ Family Demands Justice After Jail Death: The family of Samuel Hayes Jr., who died in custody at the St. Louis City Justice Center, is demanding surveillance footage and answers about what happened in his final hours. Hayes, 31, was awaiting trial for a 2024 murder and was found unresponsive after a fight and time in a restraint chair.
📹 City Promises Transparency in Jail Death Investigation: Mayor Cara Spencer and city officials offered condolences and pledged accountability following Hayes’ death, the first in-custody fatality under her administration. SLMPD’s Force Investigations Unit is reviewing the case and plans to show surveillance footage to the family soon.
📉 SLPS May Close 37 Schools: St. Louis Public Schools could shutter more than half its schools, 37 in total, by Fall 2026, citing declining enrollment and infrastructure challenges. Critics, including the teachers’ union, say the closures ignore community voices and long-term investment needs.
🛫 Southwest Airlines to Introduce Assigned Seating: Starting July 29, Southwest Airlines will shift to assigned seating for flights departing after Jan. 27, 2026, ending its traditional “first-come” boarding system. New options include extra legroom and preferred seating for an additional cost.
